Cellulite, a form of dimpling that often impacts the upper legs or buttocks, can be incredibly frustrating, and many women will go to any length to reduce or fade it. Mesotherapy cellulite is one of the dozens of clinical treatments often recommended for addressing this common condition.

In this post, we’ll explore whether mesotherapy really works for cellulite, and help you weigh the pros and cons as to whether you should give it a try.

How Does Mesotherapy Work?

Mesotherapy is an injection-based therapy. The way it’s meant to work for cellulite is quite fascinating, but also incredibly under-researched. Basically, the idea is that the area under the skin is injected with a mix of enzymes or other chemicals.

During the appointment, your practitioner may first inject the skin with a numbing agent, although often there are also numbing agents in the injection mixture itself. In other cases, they might apply a numbing cream first prior to injecting you.

Then, they will clean the area, and begin treating the skin with needles or a microneedling tool. Even with numbing, this process can be a little painful.

Treatment time will vary depending on how much area your doctor needs to cover, but it’s usually a fairly short process. Once done, you may feel a little sore or you might experience some bruising. You may see some reduction in cellulite after your first treatment, although it’s generally accepted that a few treatments are necessary to see real results.

How Effective is Mesotherapy for Cellulite?

Compared to other cellulite treatments, mesotherapy is wildly understudied. Some practitioners claim that mesotherapy for cellulite can break down the fibrous bands that contribute to the appearance of cellulite, while others suggest that it can break down fat cells. This largely depends on the specific chemicals injected.

There is only one study so far that showed that mesotherapy can make a difference. This study was done on a specific, trademarked blend of ingredients and there were only 21 participants.

Mesotherapy is also frequently pursued as a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. It’s done with chemicals that destroy fat cells and lead to a localized reduction in fat deposits.

However, it’s important to remember that eliminating fat isn’t the magical solution for eliminating cellulite. The dimpling is largely caused by a combination of factors, including the quality of your skin and the presence of fibrous bands against which body fat presses.

Is Mesotherapy Cellulite Safe?

It’s difficult to assess the safety profile of a treatment like mesotherapy because the substances injected under the skin can be different from clinic to clinic. So far, there have been numerous reports of different adverse effects.

Infection is by far the greatest risk. The injections can introduce bacteria into the body, leading to an infection. This risk is especially high if mesotherapy isn’t done in a sterile environment or by a competent medical provider. In one published report, 6 patients were actually infected with tuberculosis!

There is also a risk of allergy to the substances used in mesotherapy. You can end up with itching, redness, and swelling at the injection site. In severe cases, an allergic reaction can cause anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening condition. Since the injections usually contain a mix of different ingredients (and sometimes, the ingredients aren’t disclosed), it can be hard to predict if you’ll have a negative reaction.

In some cases, patients also experience lumpy skin irregularities or lesions known as granulomatous lesions

Is Mesotherapy Worth Getting for Cellulite?

We don’t think so. The risks we outlined for mesotherapy are quite rare, but the lack of consistency from injector to injector means that they’re also hard to predict. There are other treatments that are less invasive, less risky, more well-researched, and still effective.

Topical Anti-Cellulite Solutions

So as you can probably guess, we’re not enthusiastic about mesotherapy as a cellulite treatment. If it sounds a little too intense for you as well, you’ll be thrilled to know there are non-invasive solutions!

In general, following a healthy lifestyle can slightly help with cellulite, especially if you focus on exercise to grow muscle in the affected area and overall healthy habits that keep your skin strong and firm.

Topically, the evidence that certain ingredients like caffeine and vitamin C can help with cellulite is incredibly robust. Research shows that topical treatments with these ingredients can reduce cellulite by visibly addressing volume and skin firmness.

At Evertone, we develop a line of cellulite treatments imbued with ingredients that really work. We’ve discovered that by combining them with an at-home regimen of massage, exfoliation, and masking can help our customers achieve smoother skin within weeks!

FAQ about Mesotherapy Cellulite Treatment

Is mesotherapy cellulite treatment painful?

Mesotherapy injections can be uncomfortable or even painful, depending on your pain tolerance and the area being treated. Some providers may use a topical anesthetic to help numb the skin before the injections, which can reduce pain. That said, you will likely still experience some pain in the days following the treatment.

How many sessions of mesotherapy cellulite treatment are needed?

While this can vary from provider to provider, you can generally expect to need between 3 and 4 treatments.

Can mesotherapy be used for other cosmetic concerns besides cellulite?

Possibly, although again, research is fairly limited. Mesotherapy is often also done for pain management, skin rejuvenation, hair loss, and weight loss. The actual medication injected will vary depending on the condition.

How much does mesotherapy cellulite treatment cost?

According to RealSelf, mesotherapy injections cost around $230 on average, although costs can go up to $650 per treatment. However, since cellulite mesotherapy treatments usually require 3 or 4 sessions, the final cost can be upward of $1000.
