From removing hair to fixing bad eyesight, there’s a lot that lasers can do. But how effective are laser cellulite treatments?

Laser is basically a very powerful, focused beam of light. Depending on the wavelength of the laser, it can penetrate through human tissue, which is what’s behind its major rise as a medical and aesthetic technology. Since cellulite is one of the most common yet frustrating issues plaguing women, it makes sense to wonder whether it really works.

Different salons and medspas offer a few different types of cellulite laser treatments, so in this post, we’ll explain which work, which don't, and cover the risks and drawbacks.

How Does Laser Treatment Work on Cellulite?

Cellulite is caused by the way fat accumulates and presses against connective fibers under the skin. The treatments that reduce it need to target either the fat itself, the connective tissue, or the overall thickness and firmness of the skin. Treatments that target the connective tissue are generally the most effective.

Lasers work by heating the levels of skin or tissue in a way that impacts cellulite, like by improving skin firmness or by helping to break down fat tissue. That said, lasers that only target that skin can’t do much, beyond simply slightly improving the smoothness of the skin.

The most popular laser treatment for cellulite, Cellulaze, targets both the layers of fat and connective tissue under the skin. The way this happens is through a subcision. The doctor makes a small incision in the skin and inserts a small tube (cannula) into the treatment area. They then thread a Cellulaze laser fiber through the cannula to heat the fibrous bands beneath the skin that cause cellulite. The Cellulaze laser cuts the fibrous bands and melts away fat cells.

Laser for Cellulite: Risks and Side Effects

Laser cellulite treatments come with some risks and side effects that very directly correlate with the chance of efficacy. In other words, the more powerful and effective a laser treatment can be, the higher the risks of side effects.

In general, the common side effects include redness, pain, and even bruising - especially with more invasive laser treatments like Cellulaze.

The real concern, however, is when things go wrong, which is worryingly often. On RealSelf, Cellulaze only has a 44% satisfaction rate. While some customers simply don’t see the results they hoped for, others cite unexpected changes to their body composition, possibly as a result of the way Cellulaze breaks down adipose tissue. Considering a treatment like Cellulaze can cost upwards of $5000, it doesn’t seem like a risk worth taking to us, especially when there are better alternatives, like lymphatic drainage massage.

Hot Lasers vs. Cold Lasers

There are a few types of lasers used for cellulite treatment, but the main two categories are hot and cold lasers. The gentlest of the bunch is “cold laser” which is more accurately described as a low-level light therapy laser.

The laser used in LLLT for cellulite emits a low-level, non-thermal energy that is designed to penetrate the skin without causing any damage or pain. Most people who undergo cold laser treatment for cellulite experience little to no discomfort.

However, this laser also is not as well studied as a more invasive options. It also requires multiple treatments per week over the course of a few weeks to improve the look of cellulite, and there is no evidence of long-term results.

“Hot lasers'' are high-energy laser treatments that are deeper penetrating and more targeted, and include treatments like laser skin tightening, which heats the skin on a deeper level. Hot lasers can stimulate collagen production, resulting in tighter and smoother skin. While there can be some redness and discomfort during treatment, it usually subsides soon after. Cellulaze is also a hot laser treatment, but the difference is that it’s more surgical since the laser is actually inserted under the skin.

Evertone’s Anti-Cellulite Routine

Ultimately, we don’t think laser treatments are ideal for dealing with cellulite. While low-level light lasers are probably safe, we don’t think their results are dramatic enough to merit the costs and effort. High-energy treatments like Cellulaze might be more effective, but they’re expensive as well, and the risks are a little too high.

So what to do instead? If you’re looking for a gentle, non-invasive solution for cellulite, you can actually achieve results at home! We’ve developed an anti-cellulite body care routine that lets you take care of your skin from head to toe while actively fading the look of cellulite.

Experience unparalleled smoothness and firmness thanks to a combination of high-powered ingredients like caffeine and vitamin A, fascia-busting massage, and a daily regimen of exfoliation, masking, and nourishing the skin. Our customers see a dramatic, visible reduction in dimpling, often within weeks!

FAQ: for Laser Treatment for Cellulite

Is Cellulite Laser Treatment a Permanent Solution for Cellulite?

The answer to this is largely unknown. In research, follow-ups with laser treatments usually only happen a few months or up to a year after treatment, so whether the results will last is unclear.

How Soon can I See the Results After Cellulite Laser Treatment?

This depends on the type of laser treatment, but generally, results take a few months after the final treatment to show. In other words, it’s definitely not a procedure that offers instant gratification. Non-invasive cellulite treatments usually also require multiple treatments before any results will show, while more invasive ones like Cellulaze might only require one treatment.

Research shows that results from Acoustic Wave Therapy can be maintained for at least a year, although there is no research on how long the results can last beyond that. The best way to maintain the treatment results is through a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, and proper skincare.
